Arlington’s October unemployment rate was good enough to again rank the county’s jobs picture as brightest among the 22 major jurisdictions comprising the metropolitan Washington area.
The county’s jobless rate of 3.4 percent in October put it well ahead of any other jurisdiction, according to preliminary figures reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Loudoun County (4.1 percent), Fairfax County (4.2 percent), the city of Alexandria (4.5 percent) and a tie between Clarke County and Fauquier County (4.6 percent each) rounded out the top five jurisdictions in terms of employment for the month.
Arlington’s unemployment rate was down from 3.9 percent a year before, part of a general trend downward that was recorded across the region.
Montgomery County, Md., had the lowest unemployment (5.2 percent) among Maryland jurisdictions that are part of the metropolitan area, followed by Calvert County (5.5 percent). The lone locality in West Virginia that is part of the D.C. metro area, Jefferson County, had a jobless rate of 5.8 percent.
Only the city of Fredericksburg (9.1 percent) and the District of Columbia (10.4 percent) reported unemployment rates higher than October’s national average of 8.5 percent.
