Arlington County Republican Committee Chairman Mark Kelly has filed paperwork to serve as his party's nominee for the March 27 County Board special election.
Kelly was the lone candidate to file for the GOP nomination by the Jan. 17 deadline.
"In the coming days, I intend to file the necessary paperwork with the Registrar's office and make a formal announcement," Kelly told the Sun Gazette. "I look forward to talking with the voters about giving them a voice on the County Board."
"Arlington deserves an independent-minded board member who will recognize the challenges we face and who is committed to solving these problems, not another voice for the status quo," Kelly said.
As the Republican nominee, Kelly will face off in the special election against Green Party nominee Audrey Clement and the winner of this week's Arlington County Democratic Committee caucus. The winner of the March special election will need to turn around and defend the seat in the November general election.
Kelly has run for office twice before, in bids for Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Board. He lost to Democrats Paul Ferguson and Chris Zimmerman, respectively.
After having served previously as county GOP chairman, Kelly returned to the post last year to fill the remainder of the term of Christian Berg, who resigned to focus on his professional responsibilities.
